Tahlequah’s Lilly Garcia – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Stuteville Ford of Tahlequah

Sophomore shortstop Lilly Garcia has embraced a leadership role early in her career. Garcia combines consistent play with a team-first mindset that reflects the example set by her parents and the athletes she admires.

“My inspiration comes from my parents,” Garcia said. “They are always there to support me. My athletic inspiration is Mia Scott. She played with grit and determination and powered through adversity.”

Those influences have shaped the way Garcia approaches every aspect of the game. Playing shortstop demands preparation, communication and quick decision-making, responsibilities she embraces each time she takes the field.

“It is important to position yourself so that you can be quick and get the out,” she said. “It is always important to give 110% effort.”

That same team-first mentality carries into the batter’s box, where Garcia focuses less on individual statistics and more on creating scoring opportunities.

“My approach at the plate is to make consistent and solid contact,” Garcia said. “Moving runners and scoring them is crucial.”

The relationships Garcia has built with her teammates are among her favorite parts of the game. She credits Abby Reneau and Rylee Cruse for keeping the dugout light and energetic, while upperclassman Zoie Griffin has shown her what it means to lead by example.

“She supports me and everyone both on and off the field,” Garcia said. “She leads by example and shines in the circle.”

Garcia believes the Lady Tigers’ chemistry is one of the team’s biggest strengths.

“My team is fun to play with,” she said. “We are like-minded and want to go out and give our best. Coach Ray and Coach Stewart push us to be the best we can be and support us on and off the field.”

Away from softball, Garcia excels in the classroom and her community. She enjoys math, is active in FCA and the school’s 4.0 Society, serves on the SALT leadership team at Roots Church and volunteers mentoring younger athletes.

Those experiences have helped shape the perspective she carries onto the field.

“Success and failure are inevitable,” Garcia said. “But how I respond to those successes and failures determines a lot. A positive mindset and a good work ethic goes a long way.”

Whether ranging into the hole for a ground ball or sliding headfirst into a base, Garcia rarely finishes a game with a clean uniform. The dirt stains are simply evidence of the effort she brings to every inning, a mindset that continues to make her an important part of Tahlequah’s future.
