Tahlequah’s Braxton Baker – Athlete Spotlight

Strength is easy to notice when watching Braxton Baker in the weight room. The numbers speak for themselves — a school-record 555-pound squat is the heaviest ever recorded at Tahlequah High School. But for Baker, the most meaningful growth has come from something less visible: the discipline and character football has helped build.

Entering his senior year at Tahlequah, Baker has become known as someone willing to outwork others to reach his goals. One of the moments he looks back on with the most pride came during his sophomore season, when he recorded 11 tackles in a single game. It was a performance that reflected not only his talent, but the preparation behind it.

“Sports have taught me discipline,” Baker said. “Having good discipline builds good character.”

That lesson reaches beyond football. It shapes how Baker carries himself at school, at work and in his community. The foundation for that mindset started at home with advice from his mother that has stayed with him for years.

“My mom always told me not to be a follower, but to be a leader,” Baker said. “Always set high goals.”

That message continues to drive him. Whether it is in offseason workouts, daily responsibilities or preparing for the upcoming season, Baker pushes himself to improve and refuses to settle.

He also credits former teammate Kael Carey as someone who helped elevate his game and his mindset.

“He was someone I could look up to,” Baker said. “He pushed me in my workouts and helped me reach my potential goals.”

Influence has come from the classroom as well. Baker said Mr. McClure has been one of the teachers who has impacted him most because of his patience, kindness and willingness to invest in students.

Outside of football, Baker stays active in the Tahlequah community. He helps with track meets, volunteers with youth football and works as a lifeguard at the city pool. Those experiences have allowed him to give back while serving as a role model for younger kids. When he has free time, he enjoys being with friends and spending time at the lake, one of his favorite parts of living in Tahlequah.

As Baker prepares for his final high school season, gratitude remains at the center of his journey. He is especially thankful for coach Brad Gilbert and his mother, Chrissy Hamby, for the influence they have had on his life.

“Coach Gilbert hasn’t just taught me football,” Baker said. “He has taught me how to be a better person. He is a man of faith and loyalty.”
