In today’s fast paced world, change occurs everyday, especially in the medical field including research and technology. Students at Indian Capital Technology Center enrolled in the Health Career Certification program including Amelia Miller not only gain an entry-level introduction to healthcare but also gain an advantage to the latest advances in medicine and a fast-track to career and employment readiness.
A senior at Tahlequah High School, Miller is a member of the fastpitch softball team and the Tigers tennis program. She draws a correlation to the competitive approach within the HCC program to her experiences playing sports.
“It’s a lot of hard work. If you want to be a winner, you have to be prepared every day mentally and physically, always ready to put your best foot forward.”
Andrea McElmurry, HCC program instructor on the Tahlequah campus, likes the always-learning spirit exhibited by Miller.
“She’s a critical thinker with a strong work ethic,” said McElmurry, now in her 21st year on the Tahlequah campus. “You can see the wheels turning when she’s processing her assignments. Even more, Amelia always looks for opportunities to be a leader among her teammates.”
Growing up with both of her parents serving as first responders and a brother also in the medical field, Miller has always wanted to help others, defining herself as open minded, reliable and most importantly, a passionate person.
“Passion – it’s what drives you. Success requires the right mindset and the never give up want to in order to achieve whatever you want to do in life,” said Miller, who maintains a 4.3 grade point average and was recently named to the National Technical Honor Society at ICTC. “After my rib injury, my one in a million diagnosis before I could return to play has inspired me to want to help others the same way my doctors helped me.”
In a fast paced classroom environment, HCC students gain the basic skills needed to empower their transition into future careers in a variety of medical fields as they master anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, CPR certification and phlebotomy. The real world hands on learning includes clinicals where students learn by doing while working with residents in a local healthcare facility and by the end of the year can earn certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant which can open doors to immediate employment.
With programs like Health Career Certification, ICTC helps to develop individuals like Andrea Miller for success in the workplace by providing world-class training.
