Three straight trips to the state tennis tournament give Avry Bynum an accomplishment she can point to. The Tahlequah High School senior, however, has come to value something less visible: what it takes to keep returning.
Bynum plays varsity tennis and volleyball, two sports that have given her plenty of opportunities to compete but also taught her how much of athletics happens before the result is decided.
“Showing up to practice every day, even when I don’t feel like it, has taught me that growth comes from consistency,” Bynum said. “I’ve also learned that you can’t always control the outcome, but you can control your attitude, effort, and how you encourage the people around you.”
That approach has carried Bynum through three consecutive state tennis qualifications, the athletic achievement she is most proud of. It has also shaped the teammate she has become.
Carsyn Gilbert and Lauren Stephens provided examples Bynum could see every day. Their effort, encouragement and positive approach left an impression that went beyond wins and losses.
“Their work ethic and leadership have inspired me to become a better teammate and leader,” Bynum said.
Bynum has found the same type of influence in Coach Gilbert, her favorite teacher, who she said challenges students and athletes to become the best versions of themselves.
Her involvement reaches well beyond tennis and volleyball. Bynum participates in National Honor Society, Student Council, S-Club, Link Crew and Interact Club. She also volunteers through Waymaker Rescue and is involved with River Valley Church.
Still, some of her favorite Tahlequah memories come from simply being part of the crowd on Friday nights.
“I love seeing our community come together to support our athletes,” Bynum said. “The excitement, school spirit, and memories made on those nights are something I’ll always remember.”
As Bynum enters her senior year, she credits her parents for their support and Coach K for creating a place where her team can grow and compete.
For Bynum, three state appearances are worth remembering. The habits that helped her get there are what she intends to keep.
