Graduating from Tahlequah High School in 2019, Emily Sampson’s resume for success was impressive, including a two-time All-State softball selection that provided her the opportunity to play college softball.
After three seasons playing on the Division I level at the University of Central Arkansas, something was missing for the Tahlequah native.
“Family is and has always been important to me. I didn’t know how much I’d miss having my family there to share in my game experiences. But when I found out I was going to get my Covid year of extra eligibility, I wanted to come home,” explained Emily.
After transferring to Northeastern State University last December, Emily is all smiles when reflecting on her decision.
“Since day one, I’ve felt like I was a member of the NSU family. My teammates and coaches made me feel a part of the group, welcoming me with arms wide open,” Emily said with conviction and happiness.
Emily described her move as the right “game plan.”
“Coming to NSU is one of the best decisions of my life, not just for softball but also for school and the many friendships I’ve made that will last for a lifetime. It definitely has changed my life for the better.”
As part of the RiverHawks 30-win season, Sampson’s efforts on the field earned her MIAA All-Conference Honorable Mention honors and the league’s “Golden Glove” award for her skills behind the plate at catcher.
Another part of Emily’s happiness at NSU includes the opportunity to fulfill her career dreams as a future teacher and coach.
“I’m majoring in Health and Physical Education, I want to be a teacher and I had to do my internship this spring during the season. My instructors helped me create a game plan to complete my assignments and then they showed up at our games supporting me and my teammates, which proves they also care about me as a person, like we are all family.”
Never shy to express her feelings, Emily Sampson wants everyone to know how NSU can open doors of opportunity and success.
“Before NSU, I was searching for who I was; coming home has turned me into a whole new person who enjoys everyday and everything we do. It’s put a little pep in my step. Because of all the little things available here including all the good people and the community support, NSU is the place to be.”
