The homecoming game against Pryor came down to Michael J. Torkelson Jr.’s foot. Then a freshman, he made the game-winning field goal — a moment that remains the Tahlequah High School junior’s proudest athletic memory.

The kick supplied the drama, but Torkelson points to everything that happens before a final play when he explains what football has given him.

“Football has taught me discipline and the value of working hard, which has directly translated to the classroom and the workplace,” he said.

His schedule reflects that discipline. In addition to playing football and baseball, Torkelson maintains a 4.35 GPA while taking college courses in high school. He is also involved in honor society and Link Crew.

“I want to go to college after high school to hopefully play sports, but also just to further my education,” he said.

Chemistry teacher Mr. Fanning has helped Torkelson see how classroom lessons connect to life beyond an assignment.

“He taught me not only chemistry but its real-life, day-to-day applications, all while being a very nice person,” Torkelson said.

Braxton Baker has made a similar impression through the standard he sets beside Torkelson during training.

“Every day at workouts, it’s me and him pushing each other to work harder, which means so much to me,” Torkelson said.

Away from school, Torkelson appreciates Tahlequah’s access to both the lake and river. He also carries a message drawn from Matthew 6:34 with him: “Never worry about the future, as tomorrow worries about itself.”

Torkelson is preparing carefully for that future, but he knows he has never worked toward it alone.

“My mom and dad, through new teams and new sports, no matter what, have always been by my side and have always given everything for me,” he said. “I could never thank them enough for that.”
