Tahlequah’s Kael Dobbins-Athlete Spotlight- Presented by Stuteville Ford

Kael Dobbins’ proudest moment did not come from football, baseball or basketball. The Tahlequah High School senior points instead to accepting Christ as his Savior, a decision that guides his priorities in competition, school and service.

“Athletically, my memories will revolve around the great teammates, coaches and community members who have supported me throughout the years,” Dobbins said.

Rather than choosing a game or achievement, Dobbins values the people who have shared his journey. Team sports have taught him to face adversity, recognize when a teammate needs help and keep working toward a purpose.

“We learn to win, but also how to handle losses and become better from adversity,” Dobbins said.

His brother, Duke, has made the greatest impression on him as a teammate. The brothers play basketball together, work out together and push each other to improve, regardless of the sport. Dobbins credits his parents and brothers with giving him a support system through victories and defeats.

His investment in others extends beyond athletics. Dobbins serves as president of the school fishing club and as a youth leader at Crescent Valley Baptist Church. He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the National Honor Society, and he works as a bank teller.

Fishing gives Dobbins another outlet beyond traditional school sports. He enjoys fishing for fun and in high school tournaments, and he hopes the new club continues to grow and find success.

In the classroom, Dobbins names math teacher Mr. Kinion as an important influence. Kinion’s teaching, Dobbins said, provided lessons he can apply throughout his life.

Dobbins appreciates Tahlequah’s mix of recreation and opportunity, including Lake Tenkiller, the Illinois River, the Cherokee Nation and Northeastern State University.

The advice that guides him is rooted in faith: “Sinning will keep you from reading your Bible. Reading your Bible will keep you from sinning.”

That reminder helps Dobbins separate lasting priorities from concerns that only seem important in the moment. As he completes his senior year, he plans to remain grounded in faith, respond to adversity with purpose and continue helping the people beside him move forward.
