Elvis Myers is hoping to make the most of his senior season as a Tahlequah Tiger football player after a late start playing and an accident have shortened his career. “I guess you could say I was a late bloomer. One of the coaches approached me in eighth grade and asked why I wasn’t playing football. I told him I was too scared to play and had never tried it before and didn’t know what to do. He said, “we’ll teach you what you need to know” and that’s how it started. I didn’t play until the ninth grade and that was mostly a learning experience as I subbed at defensive end and played some special teams. Then I had an ATV accident before my sophomore year and shredded my foot and missed the whole year. I came back and contributed some last year but didn’t feel like I played to my potential so I’m going to lay it all on the line this last year,” said Myers. Despite his short time on the field, Myers is drawing looks from colleges with offers from UCO, NSU and Avila University in Kansas. “Elvis has continued to grow, now nearly 6-7, and improve over the last year,” said football coach Brad Gilbert. “He’s getting some college looks at tight end and he’ll play there and in the slot for us this year and at defensive end”. Even though the Tigers lost to Wagoner last year, Myers feels that game was a highlight for him. “I had a pretty good game personally and even though we lost it kind of pumped me up for the rest of the season.” Elvis feels that with a senior-heavy team this year, the Tigers will have a good season, and he’s set some lofty personal goals. “I’d like to have at least 10 sacks and score 10 touchdowns and have 1000 yards receiving.” So, at 6-7, was basketball ever an option for Elvis? “No, I was terrible at it. And besides, you can’t hit anybody,” he laughed.
