Tahlequah’s JJ Antwine – Football Spotlight – Presented by Northeastern Health System

Senior JJ Antwine of Tahlequah High School has established himself as a key member of the football team through his talent and leadership abilities. His journey with football began in a manner familiar to many: “Whenever you score your first ever touchdown in little league or make a big play and you look up and see everyone cheering and yelling your name. Then, you instantly fall in love with it and constantly want the feeling to happen over and over again.”

JJ’s inspiration to play football is deeply rooted in his family. “My dad inspired me to play football because he was going to play D1 before he got hurt and couldn’t play anymore. My biggest influences are my mom and dad; they show me what it’s like to work hard, and if you’re going to do something, then do it right.”

The chemistry within the Tiger team is something JJ takes great pride in. “The team’s chemistry is 110%. We all are focused on this upcoming season. The weight room atmosphere is crazy—you see 60+ guys waking up at 6 a.m. and bringing energy, which feeds into everyone and onto the field.”

JJ sees his role on the team as one of leadership and accountability. “My role on my team is being a person you can ask questions to. Every player on the team holds each other accountable.”

JJ’s connection to his community is strong. “Our community is amazing. No matter a win or a loss, they will always have your back. Knowing they have my back makes playing the game a lot less stressful, which helps me stay calm and focused.”

Reflecting on his journey, JJ is proud of the relationships he’s built. “I’m most proud of the people I have met along the way. It’s been a 12-year long journey playing football in Tahlequah, and I wouldn’t have wanted this to go any differently.”

As he looks to the future, JJ’s plans are not set in stone. “I have picked up my first offer for college football, which has opened a door to many opportunities. So, after this season, we will just have to see what’s best for my future.”
