In Cherokee County, amid the sprawling beauty of rural life, Junior Trenton Drywater stands tall at Sequoyah Tahlequah High School, where his journey unfolds on the basketball court and on the home front.

Raised in a close-knit family, Trenton’s roots are firmly embedded in Cherokee culture. “I grew up in rural Cherokee County with a devoted family,” he shared, highlighting the support of his parents, Heather and Blue, and siblings, Memphis and Meyah. A basketball enthusiast since childhood, Trenton’s path led him from Grandview Elementary to Sequoyah High School, driven by a passion for the game and a desire to don the coveted Sequoyah jersey.

The inspiration to play sports was sown by Trenton’s parents, who recognized a latent talent. “My parents inspired me to play sports. They saw something in me that I could not see myself,” he acknowledged. 

Balancing academics and athletics amidst the backdrop of family challenges in 2023, when Trenton’s mother battled breast cancer, required patience and resilience. “2023 was definitely a mental-game year,” he reflected, underscoring the importance of family support and shared love that saw them through.

Amidst the trials, Trenton cherishes the undefeated freshman basketball season, embodying the joy of playing alongside lifelong friends. The challenges he faced, including adjusting to new coaches and schools, became opportunities for personal growth. “I overcame this challenge through the support of family and friends and by doing work. You have to put in the time to develop your game,” Trenton emphasized.

Being part of a team at Sequoyah brought forth leadership qualities in Trenton. “As a senior, it is not just about improving my game; I improve my personal growth and character by ensuring I am making our entire team better,” he asserted, emphasizing the collective spirit that propels them forward.

Now in his final season of high school basketball, Trenton contemplates a future that may or may not include basketball at the next level. “If I am given that opportunity to play, then I think my family would like me to continue,” he stated. However, he also has plans to become an electrician and obtaining a Journeyman License in the electrical trade.
