It’s rare that in the “big leagues” a rookie goes straight into the prime time starting lineup. The same is true on the high school level. But this year Beckett Robinson is making a name for himself in the starting lineup for the Tahlequah Tigers baseball team as he grabbed a bat and came out swinging.

“The best part of my game is when I’m at the plate,” said Robinson. “So far this spring I’m maintaining a .500 batting average.”

Tigers head coach Sam Nelson admits the 6-foot-1 freshman is a true talent.

“We’ve asked a lot of him, especially for a freshman, but it hasn’t stopped him,” confirmed the Tahlequah skipper. “He’s done a great job understanding his role. Beckett is what I call a 5-tool player.”

In baseball terminology, Nelson’s 5-tool description credits the Tiger freshman’s ability to hit for power and average plus the ability to use his speed to complement his glove skills magnified by a strong arm.

“He’s definitely maturing under pressure,” said Nelson.

Robinson’s speed and arm strength create a game changing talent for the Tigers in the outfield.

“Playing centerfield is my favorite position because I can use my speed to track down balls for an out or hold a runner from taking an extra base,” replied “Bucket” as he’s known to his teammates. 

When challenged to define himself, on and off the field, Robinson responded with confidence.

“Outgoing, intuitive and most importantly, committed,” answered Robinson while tugging at the front of his number-11 jersey and touching his heart with pride. “If you’re going to do it, give it all you got.”

Robinson, who also plays football for the Tigers contributing on offense and defense, believes the multi-sport experience benefits his skills.

“Whatever sport is in season is my favorite. Most definitely, football helps me improve my footwork and explosiveness.”

Robinson, who also masters his academic responsibilities by maintaining a 4.0 GPA, takes nothing for granted citing a well-known statement as his motivation to improve everyday, both on and off the field.

“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” quoted Robinson noting his conviction and beliefs about the requirements to discover success in all facets of his life. “No matter the score, challenge or opportunity, I want to be the guy that people can look back and say NEVER did that guy not give you the best he could.”
